Purpose of the Project
To create a supportive, remote rehabilitation system tailored for stroke patients, especially those who need help recovering hand movement abilities. Stroke recovery often requires frequent and regular hand exercises, which can be difficult to maintain due to factors like limited access to physical therapy or lack of motivation. Our online rehabilitation tool offers a convenient solution, allowing patients to perform therapeutic exercises from home, with guidance and monitoring from their healthcare providers.
Calibrating Hand Gesture Recognition for Stroke Rehabilitation Internet-of-Things (RIOT) Using MediaPipe in Smart Healthcare Systems
Our project is designed to create a remote rehabilitation tool tailored specifically for stroke patients who need help with hand movement recovery. The goal of this system, called the Rehabilitation Internet of Things (RIOT), is to make it easier for patients to perform therapeutic exercises from home, with ongoing support and monitoring from healthcare providers. This online tool is part of a "Smart Healthcare" approach that aims to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of stroke rehabilitation by using advanced technology to track and guide patients through their exercises.
- By using a camera, the system can detect specific hand gestures and provide real-time feedback
- Helping patients understand if they are doing the exercises correctly
- This gesture detection is powered by MediaPipe technology, which is highly accurate and adaptable. MediaPipe allows the system to recognize various hand positions and gestures essential for rehabilitation, making it an effective and precise tool for tracking progress.
To ensure that the system works accurately in different environments, we have carefully calibrated it for optimal performance. This means that the system has been adjusted to recognize hand gestures even under various lighting conditions, camera angles, and distances. By calibrating the system in this way, we can make sure that it provides reliable feedback, regardless of whether patients are using it in a bright or dimly lit room or with different types of cameras.
A key feature of the RIOT system is its ability to track patient progress over time. Each session is recorded, allowing both patients and healthcare providers to see improvements. Patients receive personalized reports that summarize their exercise sessions and analyze their hand gestures. These detailed progress reports are easy to understand and show the positive steps taken in the rehabilitation journey, helping patients stay motivated and informed about their recovery.
We also prioritize data privacy and security in the RIOT system. All patient data, including health information and progress reports, is securely stored and protected, ensuring that privacy is always maintained. This allows patients to use the system with confidence, knowing that their information is handled with care.
